Kyoto Autumn Festivals: A 3-Day Plan Around October 22

Choose October 21–23 for this suggested three-day Kyoto stay. Jidai Matsuri and Kurama Fire Festival share October 22. They are not separate consecutive festival days, and seeing both should remain optional rather than a guaranteed connection.

Day 1: October 21, arrive in Kyoto

Check in and explore a nearby area at a relaxed pace. Review official routes, weather decisions and transport notices. Keep the evening flexible rather than adding an unconfirmed festival.

Day 2: October 22, choose your main event

For Jidai Matsuri, choose a permitted viewing location from the official procession route. For Kurama, use the current public-transport and crowd-control guidance. If considering both, check entry restrictions and return transport first; long queues can make the combination impractical. Leave time to eat and rest.

Day 3: October 23, flexible sightseeing or departure

Keep this day open for a slower Kyoto visit. Jidai Matsuri's organizer announces weather-related postponements; a spare day gives flexibility but does not guarantee the event will run.

Why Takayama is a separate trip

Autumn Takayama Festival takes place October 9–10. It does not fit within an October 21–23 Kyoto stay. Choose an early-October Takayama trip instead, or allow a much longer journey between the two dates.
