Day 1: Jidai Matsuri Morning + Kurama Fire Evening

The single biggest day in the autumn festival calendar. Two of Kyoto's three great festivals on the same date, separated by 30 minutes of travel.

  • 09:00 — Imperial Palace's Kenrei-mon Gate. Free standing area, but reserved seats (¥4,000) along the Marutamachi-dori route guarantee viewing.
  • 12:00 — Procession starts. 2,000 participants in costumes spanning 1,200 years (Meiji era backwards to Heian). Ends at Heian Shrine ~14:30.
  • 15:00 — Lunch in Higashiyama. Recovery time.
  • 17:00 — Train to Kurama (Eizan Railway from Demachi-Yanagi, ~30 min). Arrive before village access closes at capacity.
  • 19:00-21:00Kurama Fire Festival — 5-meter torches paraded by villagers. The smoke and heat are intense; bring water and a non-flammable jacket.
  • 22:00 — Return to Kyoto. Trains can be packed; consider waiting 30 min.

Day 2: Kyoto Recovery + Foliage

  • 10:00 — Eikando temple (autumn foliage peak in late October). ¥600.
  • 13:00 — Lunch at Pontocho.
  • 15:00 — Tofukuji's Tsutenkyo Bridge for the autumn-leaves canopy view. ¥1,000.
  • 18:00 — Kiyomizu-dera evening illumination during foliage season. ¥400 special evening entry.

Day 3: Takayama Autumn Festival Day-Trip

  • 06:30 — Kyoto → Nagoya Shinkansen (~50 min) → Takayama JR Hida limited express (~2h 20min). Total ~3.5h.
  • 10:30 — Arrive Takayama. Takayama Autumn Festival is October 9-10 — only do this leg if your trip overlaps. Otherwise substitute Sanmachi old-town walking.
  • 11:00-15:00 — Yatai parade and karakuri puppet performances. Eleven UNESCO-recognized floats with mechanical puppetry.
  • 17:00 — Hida-gyu beef dinner.
  • 19:00 — Evening yatai illumination procession (the highlight).
  • 21:00 — Late return to Kyoto or stay overnight in Takayama (book 6 months ahead).

FAQ

Is doing Jidai Matsuri and Kurama Fire same day too aggressive?

Manageable but tiring. Jidai ends 14:30, Kurama starts 19:00 — a 30-min train ride between. Recovery in Higashiyama (15:00-17:00) is essential. Attendance guide covers crowd safety.

What if I'm only in Kyoto for these dates?

Skip Day 3 and substitute a foliage day. October's Kyoto pairs perfectly with Eikando, Kiyomizu illuminations, Tofukuji, and Arashiyama leaves. See Kyoto festivals guide and autumn festivals guide.

Is Kurama Fire Festival accessible for foreign visitors?

Yes — Eizan Railway runs special services on October 22. Capacity restrictions kick in once village fills (typically by 18:30). Arrive by 17:30 from Kyoto. Wear non-flammable clothing; sparks are common.

Can I skip Takayama and add Nikko instead?

Yes — Nikko's autumn foliage season overlaps. Tokyo → Nikko → Toshogu Shrine + Lake Chuzenji is doable as a 1-day Tokyo-based extension. Pair with Tokyo festivals guide.

What about Chichibu Yomatsuri?

Chichibu Yomatsuri is December 2-3, not October. For an autumn → early winter Japan trip, do this 3-day plan + Chichibu day-trip from Tokyo in early December. See Chichibu Yomatsuri page.
