FAQ

Is the JR East Tohoku Area Pass worth it?

Absolutely — at ¥20,000 for 5 days of unlimited Shinkansen + JR limited express, you save ~40% versus single tickets for a 4-festival loop. Buy at Tokyo / Narita JR Travel Service Center on arrival.

How crowded are the parades?

Nebuta and Kanto draw 1.5M+ visitors over their week-long runs. Expect to arrive 1-2 hours early for the best free viewing spots. Paid grandstands sell out 2-3 months ahead. Attendance guide covers crowd safety.

Can I do this in 4 days instead of 5?

Yes — skip the onsen night between Day 3 and 4. Take a late-night Shinkansen from Yamagata to Sendai. You lose recovery time but gain a full day. Recommended only if you don't mind back-to-back parades.

What if I miss the festival window?

The four big Tohoku festivals run only Aug 2-8 each year. If you visit in another season, target Yokote Kamakura Festival (mid-February snow huts) or Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival (late April). See Tohoku festivals guide.

Can I extend with Sapporo Snow Festival?

No — Tohoku festivals are summer-only. Sapporo Snow Festival is early February. They're complementary winter / summer trips.
