Hakata Dontaku, a vibrant matsuri in Fukuoka, Kyushu, boasts a rich history tracing back over 800 years to the Hakata merchants' New Year's greetings procession, known as Matsubayashi. This traditional event evolved through centuries, facing bans and revivals, eventually becoming the modern spectacle it is today, celebrating the city's spirit and culture. Held annually during Golden Week on May 3rd and 4th, Hakata Dontaku transforms Fukuoka's streets into a massive celebratory stage. Visitors can expect joyous crowds, elaborate floats, and non-stop entertainment across the city. The undisputed highlight is the "Dontaku Parade," featuring thousands of participants in colorful costumes, dancing and playing traditional instruments like shamisen and taiko. Unique to Dontaku are the *shamoiji* (rice paddles) clapped rhythmically by participants and spectators alike, creating a distinctive, infectious sound. Various "Dontaku Plaza" stages host performances ranging from traditional dance to contemporary music, while vibrant *hana jidosha* (flower cars), beautifully decorated vehicles, add to the spectacle. For practical visitor tips, plan well in advance, as hotels book up quickly during Golden Week. Arrive early to secure good viewing spots along the parade route, especially near Tenjin and Canal City Hakata. Public transport, particularly the subway, is the best way to navigate, as many roads are closed. Stay hydrated, wear comfortable shoes, and embrace the festive atmosphere, trying local Fukuoka street food from the numerous vendors.
