Crowd Level
Extremely crowdedAdrenaline-fueled festival where massive wooden carts race through narrow streets.
Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri is one of Japan's most thrilling festivals, where 34 massive wooden carts (danjiri) weighing 4 tons each are pulled at full speed through narrow streets. The most exciting moment is the yarimawashi, where the danjiri make sharp turns at intersections at breakneck speed. A rooftop dancer (daikugata) performs acrobatic moves atop the speeding cart.
Highlights
Yarimawashi - danjiri carts making sharp turns at full speed; Daikugata rooftop acrobatic performances; Evening parade with lantern-lit danjiri
Access
Take the Nankai Main Line to Kishiwada Station (about 25 minutes from Namba). The main festival area is around Kishiwada Castle, a 10-minute walk from the station.
Tips for Visitors
The yarimawashi at the Kankan-ba intersection is the most popular viewing point - arrive very early. Keep a safe distance as the carts move extremely fast. The September Trial Festival the week before is less crowded and equally exciting.
