Owara Kaze no Bon is a hauntingly beautiful folk dance festival in the mountain town of Yatsuo in Toyama Prefecture. Dancers in elegant traditional costumes and deep straw hats perform graceful, melancholic dances through the streets to the sounds of the shamisen and kokyū. The festival has an ethereal atmosphere, particularly enchanting during the late-night dancing through the old town.
Highlights
Graceful bon dance performed in elegant kimono and deep straw hats; Haunting music of shamisen and kokyū (bowed string instrument); Late-night street dancing through the atmospheric old town
Access
Take JR Takayama Line to Etchu-Yatsuo Station (25 min from Toyama Station). During the festival, shuttle buses operate from Toyama Station.
Tips for Visitors
The festival is most atmospheric after 11 PM during the unscheduled machi-nagashi street dancing. The town is very small and gets extremely crowded; consider visiting on the pre-festival nights (Aug 20-30) for a quieter experience. Bring warm clothes as mountain evenings are cool.
