The Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival (Hyoto Matsuri) showcases otherworldly ice sculptures made from the crystal-clear waters of Lake Shikotsu, known as one of Japan's clearest lakes. The sculptures are sprayed with lake water that freezes into natural blue-tinted ice formations, creating a surreal frozen landscape. At night, colorful LED illumination transforms the ice sculptures into a kaleidoscope of light.

Tips for Visitors
Night illumination (16:30-22:00) is the main attraction — plan an evening visit. Combine with a soak in the nearby Marukoma Onsen or Shikotsu Kohan onsen. Temperatures drop below -10°C at night, so bundle up. Weekdays are significantly less crowded.
