Grand festival at Nikko Toshogu with a 'Thousand Warrior' samurai procession.
The Toshogu Grand Festival is Nikko's most spectacular annual event, reenacting the procession that carried Tokugawa Ieyasu's remains to Nikko in 1617. Over 1,000 participants in samurai armor march through the shrine grounds in the Hyakumono-Zoroe Sennin Gyoretsu (Procession of 1,000 Warriors). Yabusame horseback archery adds to the martial spectacle.
