勝山左義長まつり

やぐらの上で囃子に合わせて浮かれ踊る、勝山の冬の伝統行事。

The Katsuyama Sagicho Festival, held annually in late February in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, is a vibrant matsuri celebrating winter's end and good fortune. With a history spanning over 400 years, this traditional event is deeply rooted in local culture, originally a purification ritual warding off evil and ensuring bountiful harvests. Visitors to the Katsuyama Sagicho Festival can expect a lively atmosphere filled with unique music and dance. The city center transforms as numerous Sagicho yagura, impressive wooden towers adorned with lanterns, are erected. Throughout the day and evening, local residents, including children known as Oteko, perform the energetic Sagicho Bayashi, a distinctive musical style often described as "crazy" for its infectious rhythm and playful lyrics. Played on taiko drums, flutes, and shamisen, this music accompanies spontaneous street dancing, inviting revelry. The festival's ultimate highlight is the climactic burning of the yagura towers on the final night. As darkness falls, these meticulously crafted structures are set ablaze, creating a spectacular inferno symbolizing the burning away of bad luck and welcoming spring. The towering flames illuminate the night sky, drawing crowds in a powerful, communal experience. For practical visitor tips, late February in Fukui is cold; dressing warmly in layers is essential. Arriving early, especially for evening events, helps secure good viewing spots for the yagura burning. Public transport or designated parking is advisable as central streets often close. Sample local street food from numerous stalls along festival routes, offering regional delicacies.
