Otsu Festival, a spectacular autumn matsuri in Shiga, Kansai, captivates visitors with its vibrant traditions and elaborate hikiyama floats. Tracing its origins back over 400 years, this historic festival is deeply rooted in the local culture, evolving from a celebration linked to Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine into a grand procession through the city streets. Visitors can expect an electrifying atmosphere filled with the rhythmic melodies of gion-bayashi music, played by groups accompanying each float. The air buzzes with excitement as the city transforms into a lively parade ground, showcasing the community's pride and devotion. The undisputed highlights are the thirteen magnificent hikiyama floats. Each is a masterpiece of traditional craftsmanship, adorned with intricate carvings, lavish textiles, and often featuring karakuri mechanical dolls that perform captivating movements. These multi-ton floats are skillfully pulled through Otsu’s narrow streets, their bearers and musicians demonstrating remarkable coordination and spirit. As evening falls, the illuminated floats create a magical spectacle, adding another layer of beauty to the festivities. For the best experience, arrive early to secure a good viewing spot along the main parade route, particularly near Otsu City Hall or Biwako Hamaotsu Station. Public transportation, such as JR Otsu Station or the Keihan Line, is highly recommended. Accommodation in Otsu or nearby Kyoto books up quickly, so plan well in advance. Wear comfortable shoes for walking and be prepared for large crowds. Remember to respect local customs and definitely sample the delicious array of festival food stalls.
