A full week in Kyoto for the world's most famous matsuri. Gion Matsuri (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) features 32 yamaboko floats over a month-long observance, but the densest experience is July 14-17. This itinerary covers three nights of yoiyama, the Yamaboko Junko procession on July 17, and side trips to Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari, and Kibune to break up the heat.

At a Glance

  • Days: 7 (timed July 13-19; flexible for the post-festival on July 24)
  • Festivals: 4 (Gion Matsuri Yoiyama 3 nights + Yamaboko Junko + Mibu Kyogen drum + side temple visits)
  • Estimated budget: ¥120,000 / person (excluding accommodation)
  • Base area: Karasuma-Shijo (festival epicenter)

Day 1-3: Yoiyama Build-Up (July 14-16)

Each evening from 18:00, the floats are illuminated and 200,000 visitors fill central Kyoto. Stalls run along Shijo and Karasuma, and the floats house exhibits of historical tapestries. Browse Gion Matsuri detail page.

  • Day 1 (Jul 14): Naginata-boko + Tsuki-hoko viewing. Dinner: Nishiki Market kushikatsu.
  • Day 2 (Jul 15): Visit 5-6 yamaboko machiya (open-house tours of historical homes displaying floats). ¥1,000-2,000 entry per house.
  • Day 3 (Jul 16): Final yoiyama. Yatai food crawl. Stay until 22:00 for the lantern-lit procession warm-up.

Day 4: Yamaboko Junko (July 17)

  • 06:00 — Reserve a paid grandstand (¥4,000) on Shijo or get a free curbside spot by 07:30.
  • 09:00 — Procession starts. 32 floats, the most spectacular being Naginata-boko (lead) and Funa-hoko (boat-shaped, mid-procession).
  • 11:30 — Crossing turn at Shijo-Karasuma — the most photographed moment, where the wheels are forced to pivot the multi-ton floats.
  • 14:00 — Late lunch in Pontocho. Recovery in air-conditioned cafes.
  • 19:00 — Dinner: kaiseki at Hyotei or budget alternative Mishima-tei.

Day 5-6: Arashiyama + Fushimi Inari Heat Escape

July in Kyoto runs 33-36°C. After 4 intense days, take 2 days for shaded temples and water proximity.

  • Day 5: Arashiyama — Bamboo grove (early AM), Tenryu-ji garden (UNESCO), Hozugawa river boat ride (cool!), Sagano Romantic Train if running.
  • Day 6: Fushimi Inari + Tofukuji — Climb Fushimi Inari before 09:00 (cool + photogenic). Tofukuji's Tsutenkyo Bridge for green-leaf views.

Day 7: Optional Aoi Matsuri Echoes or Departure

Visit Shimogamo Shrine (the route's terminus) for context, or take the post-festival on July 24 if dates align: 11 floats reverse-direction Yamaboko Junko Atomatsuri. Pair with Kyoto festivals guide for the full annual cycle.

Stay Area Suggestions

Karasuma-Shijo is the festival epicenter — avoid for sleep but unbeatable for festival access. Gion-Higashiyama is quieter at night with iconic preserved streets. Kyoto Station is best for budget. Book 4-6 months ahead. Browse Kansai stays on StayInJapan.

FAQ

Should I do front-festival or post-festival?

Front-festival (Yamaboko Junko on July 17) — bigger and more spectacular, 23 of 32 floats. Post-festival (July 24) is smaller, calmer, with a different atmosphere. If your dates allow both, do front-festival main + Hanagasa Junko on July 24.

How do I get a paid grandstand seat?

Sales open early May via the official Kyoto Tourism Federation site. Grandstands sell out in 2-3 days. Free curbside viewing remains good if you arrive by 07:30 on July 17. See attendance guide.

How hot is it really?

33-36°C with humidity 70%+. Bring cooling towels, hand fans, electrolyte drinks, and break breaks in air-conditioned department stores along Shijo. What-to-wear guide for hot-weather festival clothing.

What if I can only do 3 days?

Skip the heat-escape days and do July 15-17. Day 1: yoiyama-evening + yamaboko viewing. Day 2: yoiyama final + nishiki market. Day 3: Yamaboko Junko + departure.

Can I combine Gion Matsuri with Osaka's Tenjin Matsuri?

Yes — Tenjin Matsuri is July 24-25. A 10-day trip can do Gion (15-17), Kyoto temples (18-20), Osaka prep (21-23), Tenjin (24-25). See Osaka festivals guide.
